I arrived in the little village looking rather dishevelled; it seemed a bit like a place frozen in time, with its Austen-esque atmosphere, and a wedding was taking place in its church – one I was actually meant to have attended. It’s just that nobody had told me beforehand that the country roads leading there were a challenge in their own right. Three detours later, I was standing in the church garden, trying to tidy myself up.

It was only a few steps to the church door, and yet … there was this cozy swing in the church garden, right behind a cow pasture, and it drew me in as if by magic. After all, I was neither the bride nor a bridesmaid, and had virtually no obligations to the bride and groom.

Before I knew it, my hat was lying next to me, my bag underneath it, and the book that someone had left there earlier transported me into the world of Oscar Wilde for a few wonderful, peaceful minutes. The swing swayed gently back and forth; I felt the wind in my hair and on my skin, the unmistakable scent of cows in my nose and – although I imagine the celebration must have been truly special and lovely – that moment on the swing will remain forever etched in my memory as my favourite part of the day.

When everyone came out of the church, I was able to slip in unnoticed; this enchanting moment in the immediate vicinity of the village cows will remain my little secret forever.
