The little roads are especially dangerous in this regard. One cannot walk very far there without becoming entirely distracted. A row of beehives in the late afternoon light. The sea catching silver beneath the bridge. Bicycles left carelessly against old stone walls as though no one in the world had ever been in a hurry (It is, perhaps, deeply inconvenient to discover that peace may arrive disguised as a small village road and a basket of flowers. Yet I cannot say I object to it.). Even the wind seems to behave with unnecessary romance.

It is a truth insufficiently acknowledged that a woman may set out with perfectly reasonable intentions and still lose an entire afternoon to sunlight, sea air, and the particular vanity of picturesque places.
