The Day we explored Haunted Woods
We were already fascinated by Serene Woods 2026 back in the summer, simply because of the incredible love and attention to detail that went into creating it. Now it was time to visit the Halloween landscape created by the talented people behind Serene Woods and do some exploring. So I put on something purple (my personal tribute to Halloween), and off we went.
When we arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was the absolutely insane sky, complete with an enormous moon. It was so beautiful and impressive that I could hardly stop staring at it. The whole place is designed like a corn maze, with the spirit of Halloween lurking around every corner, sometimes spooky, sometimes downright bizarre. We met the friendly owners right at the entrance, and after a brief and, as always, very pleasant chat, we set off on our adventure.
As you may know, I find spiders in my immediate surroundings only moderately delightful. Unfortunately, the arachnids were the very first things I encountered as we entered the maze. Lots of them. Big ones, little ones.
Some simply stared down at us, while others scurried around frantically, doing what spiders generally do best: terrifying people.
Fortunately, a few quick steps got us through, and the threat was behind us.
A little further along, the path split in two. And as sometimes happens with men and women, we headed in different directions because we couldn’t agree on which way to go.
Deep in thought about the injustice of a world that stubbornly refuses to acknowledge that only one person (namely me) can possibly be right, I walked straight into a swampy pond.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t alone.
I only fully realised this when a foul smell reached my nose and some rather peculiar noises started coming from behind me. Luckily, my husband was there to rescue me, and peace was restored. The fact that I simply followed along behind him from that point onwards should in no way be interpreted as an admission that his sense of direction is, admittedly, superior to mine.
After that little fright, we decided we deserved a treat, relieved to have made it this far without starving to death. The dude behind us apparently hadn’t been quite so lucky.
Neither had this poor one.
Apple in hand, we continued through the maze, with its beautifully eerie corners, peculiar seating arrangements and gloomy atmosphere, all coming together to create the perfect Halloween setting.
And yes, that is a gallows I’m sitting on.
A little further along, we found a fire and decided to take a break. After all, even the people in The Walking Dead occasionally managed to get some sleep or a bit of rest.
A few metres later, one wrong click, and there I was, sitting in a cage.
I may be mistaken, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Mike rather enjoyed it. He didn’t even bother to hide his smirk, and it took him far too long to get me out of my predicament. Probably because I was so utterly bewildered that, for once, I had absolutely nothing to say.
At some point, we unexpectedly found ourselves in a pitch-dark, blood-soaked place, with no idea how or why we’d ended up there.
As it turned out, the cave did have an exit, which led – you guessed it – straight into another cave. So we simply kept walking, hoping to find our way out. We encountered one or two rather terrifying creatures along the way, but eventually we managed to escape the caves and make it home.
A little battered and dirty (the ground in a corn maze can get rather muddy, you know…), but very happy to have found the exit.
Think you can make it out, too?
Give it a try!
