Some friendships are founded upon profound conversation, mutual improvement, and the careful cultivation of wisdom. Others are perfectly content to wander through places such as ‘Maybe Tomorrow’ at rather improper hours, allowing themselves to be distracted by every charming corner, whilst discussing life with all the gravity of philosophers and the discernment of two raccoons discovered near an open bin.
There is, I think, something peculiarly comforting in finding a person who understands one’s particular disorder without feeling the slightest inclination to put it in order. Someone who will sit cross-legged beside you in companionable silence, inhale the dubious perfume of an incense stick without protest, encourage your most questionable notions with alarming sincerity, and regard every accidental little moment as though it belonged in a film whose plot nobody has had the courtesy to explain.

One of us is quite convinced that the universe sends signs.
The other suspects it consists chiefly of confusion arranged beneath flattering lighting.
Yet both opinions continue to exist together in perfect harmony, though it must be admitted that the incense stick may bear some responsibility for this unusual peace.

Perhaps this is adulthood after all — not possessing one’s life in any real order, but performing the appearance of it tolerably well. And perhaps friendship is merely the rare good fortune of finding someone who joins willingly in the performance, whilst graciously pretending not to notice the scenes one has forgotten entirely.
