Red carpets are surprisingly difficult to impress. After years of award ceremonies, grand entrances and people who have perfected the art of looking important, they tend to become rather indifferent to the whole affair. One elegant gown follows another. Cameras flash. Someone waves. Someone poses. By the end of the evening, it all blends together into one long stretch of polished shoes and carefully practised smiles. Mine seemed no different. It lay there with the quiet resignation of something that had already seen absolutely everything.

At least until the dress arrived.

I cannot prove what happened next, but I noticed the carpet looked… different. Not dramatically so. It simply appeared to gather itself together. The red softened ever so slightly, as though it had borrowed a little turquoise for the occasion. The lights seemed warmer. Even the edges looked a touch straighter, as if the old thing had suddenly remembered that there had once been a time when making an entrance was still rather exciting.

Perhaps I imagined it. Or perhaps, every now and then, even an old red carpet enjoys dressing up for the evening.
