The ghosts were not accustomed to visitors, particularly ones who showed so little respect for the atmosphere of a respectable haunting. The old buildings had been abandoned for decades, and its inhabitants had grown rather fond of their solitude, which allowed them to spend their evenings discussing the shortcomings of the living without the inconvenience of being contradicted.

Then a couple arrived, looked around with apparent satisfaction, and began to dance.

The ghosts were intrigued. Dancing, in their experience, was something people did to attract attention, impress prospective partners or demonstrate that their marriages had not yet deteriorated beyond repair. The idea that two people might dance for no better reason than their own enjoyment seemed almost indecent. One gentleman, who had spent forty years assuring his wife that she was perfectly free to do as she pleased while making certain that she never did, declared the woman’s behaviour excessively forward. His wife remarked that he had always considered female happiness a rather suspicious activity.

But as the music continued, even the most disapproving spectators fell silent. There was something unsettling about watching two people enjoy themselves without seeking anyone’s permission. It reminded the ghosts of possibilities they had once dismissed, invitations they had declined and all the small pleasures they had sacrificed to the opinions of people who were now, rather conveniently, dead themselves.

When the couple finally disappeared into the night, the gentleman announced that he had found the entire performance vulgar.

His wife was remembering a dance she had once refused because he had disapproved of the man who asked her. She could no longer recall the young man’s face, but she remembered wanting to take his hand.”Do be quiet, dear,” she said, interrupting her husband’s lecture on proper conduct. “I rather liked them.” And for the first time in forty years, she was rather pleased that he could no longer forbid her anything.

Somewhere in the darkness, the music began again.
