I wasn’t really looking for company. But who is, when it’s already too late?
I tried to see if anyone else was there. The binoculars didn’t help.
They never do. But they make you feel like you’re doing something – as if you could bring the world back to life by staring intently.
Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work.
He sat there in his wheelchair, just skin and bones and patience.
I told him I liked his aesthetic. Did he laugh? I guess humor dies at some point, but not yet.
The place was quiet—the kind of quiet that has reigned for decades, accumulating dust and bad jokes.
The beds stood in neat rows like obedient ghosts, cobwebs hanging from the remnants of routine.
Someone must have taken care of it once. Someone probably checked in and never checked out again.
