About the Artist
Louis Wain was an English artist who rose to fame in the late 1800s for his charming and often humorous illustrations of cats dressed in human clothes and engaged in everyday activities. His cats danced, played games, drank tea, went to school—and captured the hearts of a generation.
But Wain’s work also carried a deeper emotional resonance. After his beloved wife Emily was diagnosed with cancer, Wain began drawing cats to comfort her. The drawings quickly became popular, and he devoted much of his life to feline art. Over time, his style changed dramatically—evolving from Victorian sweetness to abstract, psychedelic forms—reflecting not only shifting artistic trends, but also Wain’s own struggles with mental health, particularly schizophrenia.
His later works, often filled with swirling patterns and radiant colors, are now seen as both brilliant and poignant—offering a window into the mind of a man whose creativity remained undimmed even as his reality fractured.
The Film That Sparked the Idea
The inspiration for this exhibition came from the deeply moving biographical film The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021), starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the eccentric artist. The film beautifully captures Wain’s genius, his profound love for his wife, and his complex inner world. Through a powerful narrative and visually stunning cinematography, it rekindled public appreciation for Wain’s life and art—and inspired me to explore his legacy further in a virtual gallery setting.
