Petal fragments on the stones stick to the damp leather of his shoes. He barely notices. What strikes him more is the way her hand rests on his neck. Her fingers slide into his hair as if they belong there. Their breaths become a shared metronome
‘I could stand here like this forever,’ he thinks… Or did he say it out loud?
She smiles – that little, knowing smile that tells him she somehow heard him. If not with her ears, then with her skin.
‘Then let’s stay a little longer,’ she whispers and kisses him.
‘Forever,’ she thinks… Or maybe she said that out loud too. He kisses her with a little understanding smile … of course he understood.
Behind them, on the rack of the bicycle, kittens have discovered the Valentine gifts. One lazily swats at the bow on a bouquet of roses, the other sniffs at the corner of a box of chocolates, unimpressed by its secrecy. The red balloon trembles, a half-hearted sign of its rebellion against small sharp claws and an irresistible urge to play.

He feels her smile against his mouth as she hears the soft rustling and gentle but determined sound of a paw touching cellophane.
His hand clutches her waist a little tighter – not to hold her back, but because he doesn’t want to turn around yet. That one fascinating strand of hair that, as so often, has come loose from her hairstyle and now dreams of spring in the gentle breeze… Before closing his eyes again, he notices with amusement that the pattern on her dress matches the bicycle saddle, and he smiles once more, and although she has closed hers too, they can see each other.
The petals try to fly. The ribbon comes loose. The moment continues without anyone noticing.
No need to move. And quietly, happiness appears.
