The coffee was cold, her mood worse.
The clock ticked relentlessly, like a heartbeat in an empty room. Everything about this place reeked of the past – of cases best not reopened. And yet here she was.
‘Case #1,’ she whispered softly, circling the piece of paper between her fingers.
No name. No motive. Just a face she couldn’t forget.
Something about this case wouldn’t let her go. Maybe it was the look in his eyes. Maybe it was just the fact that no one dared to dig any further.
She wore her black dress like a suit of armour. Fabric instead of steel, but just as sharp. She also wore red pumps – a silent protest against the grey monotony of the evidence rooms. Some called her vain. She called it strategy. If you want to be taken seriously in a room full of men, wear something that will leave them speechless.
The night was long, but she knew this trail would lead her somewhere.
Maybe into the abyss.
Maybe into the truth.
Or both.
But one thing was certain – she wasn’t afraid to take the first step.
